Short answer: most "no leads" accounts have one of three problems: the wrong people are clicking (search terms), the leads aren't being counted (tracking), or the page after the click doesn't convince them (landing page). Check them in that order.
Check these 3 things first
- Search terms report (Campaign → Insights and reports → Search terms). Read what people actually typed. If you see jobs, courses, "free", "how to" or other services, you're paying for the wrong clicks.
- Conversion tracking (Goals → Conversions). Each conversion should say "Recording conversions". If it says "Unverified" or "No recent conversions", leads may be arriving but not being counted.
- Your own phone and inbox. Compare real enquiries with what Google Ads reports. If you got calls but Google shows zero, it's a tracking problem, not an ads problem.
The 12 most common reasons
1. Broad or loose match types
Broad match and AI-based keyword expansion show your ad for loosely related searches. In a new account with little conversion data, start with phrase and exact match, and add broad only once you have 15–30 conversions.
2. No negative keywords
Every service business attracts job seekers, students and bargain hunters. A starter negative list (jobs, salary, course, training, free, pdf, how to, near me if you're not local) often cuts wasted spend by a large share. See my free negative keyword list.
3. You're targeting the wrong locations
Check the location setting says "Presence: people in or regularly in your locations", not "presence or interest". The second option shows ads to people merely searching about your city from elsewhere.
4. Search Partners and Display are switched on
In a Search campaign, untick Search Partners and the Display Network until the core campaign works. Display clicks are cheap but rarely become enquiries for service businesses.
5. Conversion tracking is missing or wrong
If page views or button clicks count as conversions, Google's bidding optimizes for the wrong thing. Track only real leads: form submissions, booked calls, and calls longer than a set duration.
6. The ad promises something the page doesn't deliver
If the ad says "Free consultation" but the page opens on your company history, people leave. The headline of the page should repeat the promise in the ad.
7. The landing page is slow or hard to use on mobile
Most service searches happen on phones. If the page takes more than 3 seconds or the form is awkward to fill in on a phone, enquiries drop sharply. Test it on your own phone over mobile data.
8. Too many steps to contact you
Long forms, no phone number, no WhatsApp option: each extra step loses people. Offer the easiest contact method your customers actually use.
9. Your budget is spread too thin
₹500 a day across 100 keywords means most keywords never get enough data. Focus the budget on your 10–20 highest-intent keywords first.
10. Bidding for clicks instead of leads, or too early for smart bidding
Maximize clicks is fine for the first few weeks. Switch to Maximize conversions once you have reliable conversion data, roughly 15 or more conversions a month.
11. Your offer is the same as everyone else's
Search your own keywords and read competitors' ads. If every ad says the same thing, give people a specific reason to pick you: a price, a guarantee you can honour, a faster response time, real reviews.
12. You're judging too early
If a 3% conversion rate is normal for your industry, 20 clicks will often produce zero leads by pure chance. Judge a campaign after 50–100 clicks, not 10.
What to fix first
| If you see… | The problem is usually… | Fix first |
|---|---|---|
| Irrelevant search terms | Targeting | Negative keywords, match types, locations |
| Good search terms, people leave quickly | Landing page | Message match, speed, mobile layout |
| Calls and forms arrive but Google shows 0 | Tracking | Conversion setup in Google Ads / GTM |
| Very few impressions | Search volume or bids | More keywords, check impression share |

Frequently asked questions
Why am I getting clicks but no leads from Google Ads?
Usually because the wrong people are clicking (check the search terms report), leads aren't being tracked, or the landing page doesn't match the ad. Check those three first.
How many clicks before Google Ads should produce a lead?
It depends on your conversion rate. At 2–5%, expect roughly one lead every 20–50 clicks. Judge a campaign after 50–100 clicks.
Should I use broad match keywords?
Not in a new account. Start with phrase and exact match, and add broad match once you have steady conversion data.
Can a bad landing page stop leads even with good ads?
Yes. If the page is slow, confusing on mobile or doesn't repeat the ad's promise, good traffic will still leave without enquiring.
